How to create a Litematica schematic
To make a Litematica schematic from your own build, you select an area and save it. The mod then writes a .litematic to your schematics folder. The save is quick; the mistakes happen in the selection, the loaded chunks, and the origin.
- Open the world you want to copy from. Switch off any running redstone first.
- Add a selection box (M+A, or the stick tool) and set its two corners around the build.
- Walk around the selection until the Missing Chunks message at the bottom right is gone.
- Press Left Ctrl + Left Alt + S (saveAreaAsSchematicToFile) and name the file.
- Find the .litematic in .minecraft/schematics and load it with M, Load Schematics.
Make the selection
Litematica needs a box before it can save anything. With the defaults, M+A adds a selection box. The tool item (a stick unless you changed toolItem) sets the corners: left-click for corner 1, right-click for corner 2, while the tool HUD is showing. M+S opens the selection manager and Numpad Multiply opens the Area Editor, where you can type exact coordinates and rename boxes. Alt+scroll with the tool nudges the selection. The full key list is on Litematica hotkeys.
The default Simple mode is a single box, which is right for most builds. For a schematic with several sub-regions, switch the selection mode to Multi-Region (shown as Normal in current versions) before you start, and create a named selection file. The file name becomes the schematic’s name.
Load the chunks first
The selection can be larger than your render distance. Litematica reads only chunks the client has, so a large area makes a Missing Chunks message appear at the bottom right with a count. Move around until the count reaches zero and then save. Saving early produces a schematic with holes, and you will not notice until it is placed.
Save it
The default chord for saving the area to a file is Left Ctrl + Left Alt + S (saveAreaAsSchematicToFile). The related in-memory command (saveAreaAsInMemorySchematic) has no default key. In-memory means the schematic is loaded but not yet on disk; use Save to file from Loaded Schematics when you want to keep it. Check the file in .minecraft/schematics. If you play on a launcher with separate instances, the path is inside the instance folder.
Singleplayer versus server saves
Saved from a singleplayer world, a schematic keeps block entity data (chests, signs), entities, and scheduled block ticks, because the mod reads the integrated server’s world. Saved on a server, the vanilla client does not receive inventories, villager trades or scheduled ticks, so those are missing. If you need the contents, copy the build into a singleplayer world and save it there.
Turn off redstone before you save. A running contraption saved mid-cycle gives you moving pistons or powered observers in the file, and no scheduled ticks to pause them.
Avoid the Manual Origin trap
Manual Origin is an area option that is easy to enable by accident. If it is on and the origin is far away from the build, the schematic is saved with the same offset. After loading, all you see is the small cyan origin box while the build sits thousands of blocks away in unloaded chunks. Leave it off unless you need it.
Use it, share it, convert it
The result loads like any other file: load a .litematic, then build by layer or paste it in Creative. If someone on your server uses WorldEdit instead, see .schem to .litematic and .litematic vs .schem. For file size or build limits there is schematic size limits.
If you have no build to copy yet, the schematic generator can produce a starter house, tower, or farm as a .litematic that you then edit with Edit Schematic mode.
Companion note: Litematica shows only a small cyan box after loading? Check the Manual Origin option (short version on Telegraph).
FAQ
How do I make my own schematic in Litematica?
Create an area selection around the build, then save that area as a schematic. The default save-to-file hotkey is Left Ctrl + Left Alt + S. The file lands in the schematics folder inside your Minecraft directory.
What does Missing Chunks mean when I save?
Part of your selection is outside the chunks your client has loaded. Walk or fly near it until the count disappears, then save again. The mod can only read what is loaded.
Why are the chests in my schematic empty?
On a multiplayer server the client does not receive inventory contents or full entity data, so a schematic saved there has none. Saved from singleplayer, the file keeps block entity data and scheduled ticks.
Why do I only see a tiny cyan box after loading my schematic?
A Manual Origin was enabled in the area but set far from the build. The placement origin is where the box appears, and the actual region is offset by that distance. Re-save without Manual Origin, or move the sub-regions in the placement settings.
