How to update Litematica

Updating Litematica is replacing one jar with a newer one built for the same Minecraft version, and doing the same for MaLiLib. Your schematics and settings stay. Since the July 2026 security fix for 1.21+, it is worth doing even if everything works.

  1. Close Minecraft and the launcher.
  2. Note your Minecraft version and the Litematica jar name in the mods folder.
  3. Download the newest Litematica for that exact Minecraft version from the Modrinth project page.
  4. Download the MaLiLib build for the same Minecraft version.
  5. Delete the old Litematica jar and the old MaLiLib jar from the mods folder.
  6. Copy the two new jars in, start the game, and check the version again.

Which file to download

On the Modrinth project page, pick the game version filter that matches your launcher profile, then the Fabric loader. A 1.21.4 file is named like litematica-fabric-1.21.4-0.21.7.jar: the first number is Minecraft, the second is the mod. On 2026-10-02 Modrinth lists 0.21.7 as the newest Litematica for 1.21.4 and 0.28.8 for 26.2. MaLiLib for 1.21.4 is malilib-fabric-1.21.4-0.23.5.jar.

After the swap

Start the game and open the mod menu key, M, to confirm Litematica loads. If the game closes before the title screen, the usual cause is a missing or mismatched MaLiLib, covered in MaLiLib missing. If the mod loads but a schematic does not show, go to schematic not showing.

Generate a .litematic

To read the version off a jar name, use what Litematica version do I have. The list of fixed builds per Minecraft version is on the Litematica vulnerability page. For a first install, see how to install Litematica.

FAQ

Do I need to update MaLiLib too?

Yes, keep them as a pair. Litematica needs MaLiLib. For 1.21.4 the newest MaLiLib on Modrinth is 0.23.5, and a Litematica that is too old for it triggers a breaks warning. See the MaLiLib missing page for the message.

Will I lose my schematics when I update?

No. Schematics live in the schematics folder next to the mods folder, not in the jar. Only the jar changes.

Why delete the old jar?

Two Litematica jars for one Minecraft version in the mods folder make the loader complain or load the wrong one. Replace, do not stack.

Is updating a security fix?

For Minecraft 1.21 and newer, yes. The July 2026 vulnerability is fixed in the builds listed on the Litematica vulnerability page.

Can I update across Minecraft versions?

No. A Litematica jar is built for one Minecraft version or a small range. Moving to a new Minecraft version means downloading the build for that version.
